Travel Restrictions

COVID-19 is taken very seriously in Puerto Rico. Before you are allowed to enter the island, you either need to prove vaccination status, or you need to demonstrate a negative test within the last 72 hours.

Masks are mandatory in all closed places and those open to 50 people or more.

Children ages 12 and under cannot be permitted to attend events with a large gathering of people even if they have a negative test.

How to Get Around Vieques

You may wonder why there is a need to talk about traveling around the island, but if you visited unprepared, you'd discover why. Most places that house the natural beauty of the island cannot be found by car.

On top of that, pothole covered roads and tight dirt passages may be necessary to get to specific beaches. We will outline the options available to you down below, as well as their pros and cons.

Car Rental

Renting a car in San Juan and bringing it to Vieques might be something you'd be interested in doing. However, there are some issues you may want to consider.

Renters often won't work with tourists heading to Vieques because the roads there are in such disrepair. You may get to Vieques with a car rental only to find out you can't go everywhere you want. Plus you need to pay the cargo fee for the ferry.

Taxi

You could just use the taxi system on Vieques. However, some of Vieques' top sights won't be available to you. While you won't have to worry about vehicle prices, you'll have to invest more time into planning your vacation out.

Scooter Rental

If you are looking for a smaller form of transportation, scooters work pretty well. It can be a pain if you are traveling in a larger group, but for couples it can work nicely.

UTV / Golf Cart Rental

These are one of the more popular modes of travel on Vieques. They aren't as expensive as a full-blown car, but they can get you where you need to go, and have a bit of cover for when it inevitably rains.

Jeep Rental

One of the best (but most expensive) way to travel. Great cover, all-terrain, and nice for larger groups. What's to hate?
